[más]The Port Chicago Naval Magazine in Martinez, California is a National Monument that commemorates those that died in a naval explosion on July 17, 1944, which killed 320 men. The explosion on a military ammunitions ship was heard for many miles around and lit up the night sky, shattering the windows of the houses in the east bay area of San Francisco.
The Port Chicago Naval Magazine became the National Park Service’s 292nd unit in October 2009. It is open to visitors who can access it via a shuttle bus from the Concord Naval Weapons Station’s main entrance. There are no admission fees to the memorial or for the shuttle bus, which picks visitors up at the entrance and takes them on a guided tour. Reservations must however be made at least two weeks in advance and the tour is only open to US residents.
An annual commemorative event takes place here each July to honour those that died.
